muscat international airport
Background
Muscat International Airport is the largest airport in Oman and the main hub of the national carrier Oman Air. Situated 32 km from Muscat, the airport carries more than 6.5 million passengers every year. The new terminal will increase capacity by 12 million passengers a year. The new passenger area inside the terminal, The Pier, provides an additional 17,000 square meters of passenger lounge and retail space across two levels.
Scope
With increasing passenger traffic and the requirement for aesthetically pleasing interiors, the building consultant required tiles that would act as a contrast to the existing themed lighting and decors in the terminal area. The rich and bold colored textures of Newport and Slate Gres Porcellanato Series worked well to contrast with the lighting and design. The high-breaking strength of both these models means they are perfectly suited to the increased footfall and trolley traffic within the new terminal.
Results
The airport expansion was designed to reflect international airports worldwide and whilst it was important to retain the traditional values it was also important to give the airport a modern, vibrant feel. RAK Ceramics Newport and Slate Series was able to do this. The building consultants were impressed with the durability of the tiles, the quality and the production capabilities of RAK Ceramics.
